    31. from scratch 从头开始
    a: hey! where did you get this cake? it's so yummy!
    a: 嘿! 你这蛋糕在哪里买的(弄来)啊? 真好吃!
    b: i made it from scratch.
    b: 我自己做的。
    一般的美国的超市里都有卖很多关于吃的东西的「半成品」, 像蛋糕、饼干、马铃薯泥...等已经调配好的粉。 你通常只要再加一、二样的东西, 烤一烤、煮一煮, 就可以享受那种像大厨师的成就感。不过这里的"made it from scratch" 是指一切自己来, 没有「外力」帮忙的。有时候有美国朋友吃了黛西做的水饺(dumplings)后会问我水饺是哪里买来的。 最头痛的就是每次我告诉他们 "i made them myself." (我自己做的。) , 他们总瞪大眼睛说 "you made them from scratch? you made the wraps yourself?" (你自己做的? 连皮也是???)。唉 ...
    32. you scratch my back, i scratch yours. 让我们互相合作。
    a: so, how is this going to work out?
    a: 那么, 这件事要怎么做呢?
    b: well, you scratch my back, i scratch yours.
    b: 嗯! 你帮我, 我就帮你啰!
    "scratch" 当动词时有「骚痒」的意思。所以这句 "you scratch my back, i scratch yours. " -「你抓我的背, 我就抓你的背」就变成「互相合作」, 是不是蛮有意思的呢?
    33. have a thing about 对某事(人)有强烈的好(或恶)
    a: wow! what are all these barbie dolls all about?
    a: 哇! 这堆芭比娃娃是怎么回事啊?
    b: well. my wife collects them. she seems to have a thing about barbie dolls.
    b: 嗯.. 我太太收集他们。她似乎很喜欢芭比娃娃。
    "have a thing about" 指的是一个人对某个东西(或某个人)的一种强烈感觉, 不一定是喜好, 也不一定是厌恶。但不管如何, 这个感觉都必须是「强烈」的。
    34. full of it 胡说一通; 错的
    a: kenneth said he saw you flirting with this amy girl. what's going on?
    a: kenneth 说他看见你跟这个叫 amy 的女孩子打屁。这是怎么一回事?
    b: when? he's full of it.
    b: 什么时候? 他乱说!
    "full of it"的"it"其实指的是"shit", 不过有些人不喜欢说那个字, 就会用"it"或"crap"来代替, 同样都是指「胡扯」的意思。
    35. up in the air (事情)悬而未决
    a: i thought you guys have been working on this project for a while.
    a: 我以为你们这项工作已经作了一阵子了。
    b: i know. our project director resigned last month. until we figure things out, everything will be up in the air.
    b: 我知道。(但是)我们的指导者上个月辞职了, 在我们想好该怎么做之前, 一切都会悬在那里。
    "you guys" 其实就相当于"you", 都是你们的意思, 不过美国人习惯加个"guys"在后面, 指的对象也不必全是男生。
    "up in the air" 的原意是「在空中」的意思。用来形容一件事「悬而未决」应该是很贴切的。
