currently, many governments have taken the lead in public to eliminate tobacco by banning smoking in many places, including restaurants, buses and trains. an even more serious thought is taking place that tobacco use should be made illegal as the same way as other drugs. personally, i believe, although the approvement of antismoking is reasonable, the banning of tobacco is an attack on all smokers’ freedoms.
on the one hand, it must be born in mind that tobacco smoking is a health hazard, which affects not only the smokers themselves but also all the people around them. however, actually according to a latest research, a man who just has 7 to 15 cigarettes one day will benefit much more to his digest and nerve systems than its damage. if there is no benefit in smoking at all, why do billions of people in the world smoke everyday? moreover, tobacco using is far less addictive and harmful than other drugs, and it also can release the pressure of people in our daily life.
on the other hand, it is not good for people to just spoil smokers’ rights and make tobacco illegal. i, as a heavy smoker, am quite sure that i am all along in stating that the hallmark of a civilized society is the willingness of citizens and the whole public to respect every one’s right and freedom that our people should have. it is true that the “second-hand smoking” will cause diseases and bad-effects to non-smokers, but it is also the right for smokers to use tobacco alone or with other smokers. that will be more sensitive to respect and preserve everybody’s willingness.
the critics may be right, but it is really not necessary to surrender all smokers’ freedoms in this case. to my mind, the ban on tobacco cannot be proved for it is not good to injure or ruin somebody’s right to benefit others’. therefore, the ban on tobacco is wrong logically and morally, and we should permit every one to have his/her freedom as one’s right to live.
