    最开始学的时候,大家最先学会的词汇里肯定有stand up吧?嗯,上英语课的时候,班长都会喊这个口令的哦。其实,stand这个词意思还挺多的,今天我们来看看其中几个比较常用的表达。
    1. stand-out 才华出众的人
    这儿在stand和out之间有一个连词符号。 stand-out当名词用,它和形容词outstanding意义相关连。不少人知道outstanding是“杰出的”。那么stand-out就必然是鹤立鸡群的人或者物了。例如:
    jennifer gets all a's in her courses. in the fall, she's going to harvard to study chemical engineering. she's a real stand-out。
    jennifer学业成绩全优。今年秋天她将上哈佛大学学工程。她真是个杰出人才。
    2. stand the heat 吃苦耐劳、经得起批评和种种考验
    在这儿stand是动词,意思为“忍受”。stand the heat来自这样一句俗语: if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. 这句话如果直译就是:要是你受不了热,就别待在厨房里。谁都知道大热天在火辣辣的炉子旁操作的厨师是多么能吃苦耐劳,所以这句话的含意就是,如果你吃不起苦就别干那一行。例如:
    the president is always complaining about the way the press treats him. he asked for the job, though, didn't he? what i say is, if he can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen。
    总统老是抱怨报界对他的态度,可不是他自己要当总统的吗?我的意思是,他要是受不了批评指责,就别坐总统这个位子。
    3. stand somebody up 存心失某人的约
    a stand-up comic指在夜总会对观众说笑逗乐、表演幽默独脚戏的演员。可是stand somebody up跟逗乐却没什么关系了,多用来表示“放某人鸽子,失约”等意思。例如:
    i had a date with lisa at the movies last saturday but she never showed up. she said her car broke down, but i think she's lying - i'm afraid she stood me up for some other guy。
    我和lisa约好上星期六去看电影,但是她根本没来。她说她的车抛锚了,但是我觉得她在撒谎,恐怕她是为了跟别人约会而存心失约的。
    4. stand pat 打定主意,决不动摇
    pat是打扑克拿到的一手好牌。stand pat这句话起源于十九世纪晚期。玩扑克的时候如果轮到你补牌但是你有一手pat, 也就是手上的牌很好,你拿定主意不补牌,你就说,stand pat。慢慢地,stand pat被用来表示坚定不移、决不改变主意。例如:
    look, i'm not going to argue with you any more - no, you can't use the car tonight! that's my decision and i'm standing pat on it。
    我可不跟你多费口舌了,你今晚绝对不能用车! 我已经决定了,不会改变主意。
