First Day In Zhengda Gymnasium of Shantou_英文发表
it was a sleepless night. when lying on bed, i had begun picturing what would happen the next day. being a volunteer the first time, i couldn't help wondering what a volunteer's responsibilities were.
at 11:30 am on schedule, i got on the bus together with my school fellows. today, besides me, there were just three members in our translating group, a senior student from the accounting department; another from the chinese department.
the bus dispatched to pick us up was in poor condition. i felt rather uncomfortable when getting off the bus at zhengda gymnasium of shantou(汕头正大体育馆). there had been a crowd of dart players at the venue. some were absorbing in warm-up exercise, some were standing besides and watching attentively while some others were drinking beer and chatting at the top of their voice. i couldn't identify their words clearly, but i assumed that they were sharing the exciting moment in the previous events. it was an invaluable chance for the players all over the nation to meet and share.
according to the schedule, there would be the one eighth, quarter, semi-final and final in the afternoon. no foreign players came to the spot that afternoon because there were just our domestic games. three of us had nothing to do but join other dart lovers, watching our domestic players' competition. dart was still a new thing to me. without the knowledge of the various score division on the dartboard, i was totally at a loss when to give applause if the player targeted a good score. only when others cried out and gave a whistle, "excellent, well-done" did i realize i should also clap my hands. luckily, i had one young gentleman next to me who was kind enough to give guidance patiently. here, i would like to offer my undying gratitude to this gentleman for his friendliness and help. at dusk, the game came to an end. 8 lucky powerful players stood out from the 126 domestic competitors. they would have the opportunities to compete with the world's top 8 dart stars.
after the supper, the senior student and i were asked to pick up the foreign guests in shantou regency hotel(汕头帝豪酒店),the most luxurious hotel in shantou. i was nervous but more excited on the way. having heard a lot about the luxury hotel, i hadn't got any chance there. when we arrived at the hotel, the foreigners had waited in the great hall. what a wonder! the world emerging into sight was exactly the paradise that had long existed in my imagination. no enough time for me to wander around the fantasyland, but the several minutes' stay had left a strong impression on me. with the pledge that i would come back to this paradise again some day, i left the hotel with the foreigners for zhengda gym.
in the evening, there would be two important events; one was the closing ceremony for the sixth huahong cup of national open champ, and the other was the opening ceremony of the global cup professional darts championship. before the ceremony, our 8 domestic winners had a gathering with the world's top 8 in the vip room. members of the translating group accompanied them in the room. in the beginning, our domestic players didn't initiate conversation with the foreign players. my group members and i were very curious and we even pull the players' legs. our players were so easy going and friendly that they didn't feel irritated by our jokes. tang jun(汤军)---the second prize winner told me, "they are all our super stars. in the past, we just had the chance to witness their performance on tv. now, they are nearby. i just can't tell if it is true." hearing his words, i thought i knew better about their excitement when meeting their super stars face to face.
soon, the domestic players were no longer feeling uneasy. some came to their idols and asked for a signature while some others were busy taking photos. among the 8 domestic players, there were three from hong kong, one is the chairman of hong kong darts association, my linan he(何礼南), and another was mr. yaozong li(黎耀宗) and the third was mr. jiaxiong zheng(郑家雄). they were all easy going persons and told me a lot about hong kong, which also just existed in my imagination.
one of the mc was female, who was just two years elder than me. however, her english was much better than mine. i felt somewhat shamed when witnessing her fluent english and free performance on the stage. also, i was wondering when i could stand on the stage like her, displaying a high english proficiency.
