preliminary official data showed that 93.49 percent of cuba's eligible voters participated in sunday's polls to elect delegates for the municipal assemblies in the island country, local media reported.
the high voter turnout, which was based on data collected as of 17:00 local time (2100 gmt), an hour before the polling stations were closed, showed the elections were a success and indicated the people's support for the country's socialist democracy, president of the national electoral commission (nec) ana maria mari machado told reporters.
more than 6 million people, out of some 8.1 million eligible voters, had cast their votes by noon, said machado.
according to the nec, sunday's municipal elections went on with "organization, discipline and massive participation."
a total of 34,766 registered candidates were competing for 15,093 seats in cuba's 169 municipalities. if no candidates get more than 50 percent of the valid votes, a runoff election will be held on may 2.
the current municipal elections are the 14th in cuba since 1976.
