NBA bans Artest for season_运动Sports
indiana pacers player ron artest has almost a whole year to ponder the actions that got him into a fight with a fan during a game last friday night.
he now says he regrets the fight with detroit pistons fans, which led to his suspension for the rest of the season.
artest helped cause an ugly fight where fists went flying, along with plastic cups, bottles and even a chair in a shameful night for the nba.
it all started when detroit's ben wallace pushed artest's face after the latter fouled him hard from behind. then players from both teams joined in. the situation developed when artest stormed into the stands after being hit by a full cup.
suspensions
artest and teammate stephen jackson charged into the stands and fought with fans in the final minute of their game against the pistons in detroit. the brawl forced an early end to the pacers' 97-82 win.
after several minutes of players fighting with fans in the stands, a chair, beer, ice, and popcorn were thrown at the pacers as they made their way to the locker room.
"i felt like i was fighting for my life out there," pacers coach rick carlisle said. "i'm sorry the game had to end this way."
total of 55 games because of the fight.
overall, the nba banned nine players for more than 140 games, some of the harshest penalties ever issued. artest is the first player to be suspended for nearly an entire season for a fight during a game.
"the message the league sent out was so powerful to players that they'll never do that again," pistons ceo tom wilson said.
indiana's stephen jackson was suspended for 30 games and jermaine o'neal for 25. detroit's ben wallace drew a six-game ban, while pacers guard anthony johnson got five games.
four players were suspended for a game apiece: indiana's reggie miller, and detroit's chauncey billups, elden campbell and derrick coleman.
all of the suspensions are without pay.
"we have to make the point that there are boundaries in our games," nba commissioner david stern said. "players cannot lose control and move into the stands."
artest has been involved in some bizarre situations, but his latest antics top them all.
earlier this month, he was benched for two games for asking carlisle for time off because of a busy schedule that included promoting a soon-to-be released rap album.
artest also destroyed tv monitors at madison square garden two years ago and missed the team flight to game 6 of the eastern conference finals at detroit last season.
he has proved to be as talented as he is unpredictable.
before the contest was stopped, artest had quite a game and the pacers were dominating the defending nba champions in their first meeting since the eastern conference finals.
artest scored 17 of his 24 points in the first quarter and the pacers led by 20 in the second.
