jude law steps into michael caine′s shoes

british acting institute's michael caine shot to fame with his role in the 1966 film 'alfie'. his portrayal of the cockney lothario whose fondness for casual sex comes back to haunt him, won him an oscar nomination. now thirty-eight years later, 'cold mountain' star jude law is set to play the same role in a hollywood remake of the classic comedy.

the new version is based on bill naughtie's original play of the same name but the producers say they have made some changes to the story due to the change in attitudes toward women since the mid-sixties.

in the original, alfie elkins was a womanising sleaze whose life is a series of shallow sexual conquests. on screen, they were broken up by michael caine's witty and frank monologues delivered straight to camera. as alfie's dalliances envelope him in complications, like having to secure an abortion for one of his mistresses, his onscreen confessions change as he begins to question his lifestyle.

while jude law's alfie also talks directly to the camera, he has decided not to attempt to imitate caine's cockney accent and address the audience with his more refined british pronunciation. in a further change from the original, much of the action takes place in new york city.
