Choosing courses isnt very easy!!_文教Education

students in most us universities have to choose their courses for the autumn semester during the summer time.

they receive their school’s course catalogue during the summer. it’s often a sizable book listing all the academic offerings for the coming semester. students then make decisions on which courses to take after reading through the catalogue. after that, they promptly pre-register online for their desired subject in order to get a provisional place.

students who fail to pre-register in time during the summer often find themselves in a frustrating situation at the start of a new semester. while their peers are ready to start class, they often have to track down and negotiate with professors and department heads to obtain late admittance permission for certain courses.

the course registration process is still in place in most american universities, while at yale, there’s a different situation.

yale students also get their course catalogue during the summer like other college students. but they’re not required to pre-register or make decisions based on the course description alone. instead, they’re offered a programme called "shopping period". it’s yale’s unique feature, and allows them to "shop" for the courses during the first two weeks of every new semester.

a shopping period is very useful because it allows students to sit in on classes they are interested in before having to make a final decision about taking them. they can experience different professors’ teaching styles and check out course reading lists. it can help them avoid taking courses they don’t enjoy for the whole semester.

yale offers over 2,000 courses at the undergraduate level. "most of us love the system and we use it to our full advantage," said one happy student.
