chinese children are having more risks of traffic injuries as the number of cars soars, with at least 19 children under the age of 15 died of road accidents everyday, a report on child pedestrian safety said tuesday.
according to the report jointly conducted by the china center for disease prevention and control and the ministry of public security, last year 7,078 children were killed by traffic accidents, 113 more than in 2003.
every day, 19 children under age of 15 were killed and 77 were injured. four road accidents out of every 10 hurt child pedestrians. forty-four percent of injured children in traffic accidents were pedestrians, said the report.
according to a survey done among 1,850 students between the ages of eight and 10 in shanghai, beijing and guangzhou, 44 percent of them ever met with very dangerous accidents caused by busy traffic or occupied or badly damaged sidewalks. about 60 percent of the students had difficulties cross the road because of insufficient signs and crosswalks.
besides improving road infrastructure and strengthening regulations, the report also calls for more comprehensive publicity of child pedestrian safety measures to child keepers, decision makers and media.
