as household budgets tighten in response to rising petrol prices and interestrate hikes, cooking, grocery shopping and cleaning are increasingly becoming a man's domain.

the survey was conducted for simply food, a new monthly cooking liftout starting tomorrow inside the daily telegraph.

two-thirds of women and men agree that men are doing more cooking at home today than similar aged men did 10 years ago.

in fact, in almost half of australian homes men are responsible for preparing meals.

a quarter of men share the cooking while one in five do all the work needed to get dinner on the table.

more than 80 per cent of australians say they are feeling the pinch as a result of recent increases in fuel prices and interest rates.

one in three say this impact has been significant - and as a result are cooking and eating at home more often, eating out less and buying less takeaway food.

about one in five men are even taking leftovers or home-made lunches to work.

marking a significantgenerational change, men aged 25 to 34 have embraced the cook's role as almost 60 per cent do some or all of the cooking.

"sam does all the cooking on the weekend and a couple of nights during the week as well,'' said hayley ruiters, 28, of her husband.

"he really enjoys cooking whereas i see it more asa chore.''

mr ruiters, 29, from camden in sydney's southwest, learned to cook from books and said his specialty for sons lochie, 5, and jackson, 2, was veal or eggplant parmigiana.

"i find it very relaxing to cook and then very rewarding when people say they enjoyed eating it,'' he said.

ms ruiters said the expense of going out to dinner as a family meant "we can't do it as often as we used to''.

nearly 60 per cent of men of all ages are also doing more of the grocery shopping - and nearly half more cleaning around the house.

the survey canvassed 500 adults in sydney, melbourne and brisbane.
