a new study of workplace relations in australia and overseas suggests feuding among employees is hurting productivity.

new zealand psychologist dr rachel morrison says it only takes one enemy at the office to profoundly affect a person's working life.

"people quite often talked about going out of their way and spending a lot of time and energy in avoiding people that they perhaps need to work with,'' said morrison, a lecturer in organisational psychology at auckland university of technology.

"they were saying things like 'i'm prepared to work long hours and to have it take twice as long to get my job done just so i don't have to talk to those people'.

"that was a really common response, that people were actually making a decision around lower productivity and working longer hours just to avoid talking to someone in their environment.''

morrison conducted the online survey of more than 400 people in australia, new zealand, the united states and some european countries.

she is presenting a paper on the findings at a joint conference of australian and new zealand psychologists in auckland this week.

while companies are clearly affected by the issue, it's difficult for them to deal with it because such feuding often goes unnoticed and unreported, morrison says.

a common attitude in the survey was that workers blamed the employer for their office relationship problems even though they wouldn't disclose them.

"management is caught between a rock and a hard place when people really want them to intervene but at the same time they're pretty unwilling to report to tell when bad stuff's going on.''

morrison said a lack of transparency in management decisions about things like promotions and perks often contributed to negative relations between workers.

she recommended that employers take steps to pre-empt worker disputes before they take hold and poison the workplace.
