warsaw (afp) - the polish government said it was opposed to the cultivation of genetically modified crops in poland, but in favor of importing genetically modified food under strict conditions.

"poland should be in principle a country free of genetically modified organisms (gmos)," said a statement issued after a weekly cabinet meeting.

however, the government said it was open to imports of genetically modified food "on condition it is clearly marked, and providing there is no possibility it is transformed" into other products.

around 76 percent of polish consumers are opposed to genetically modified crops, according to a recent poll by environmental campaign group greenpeace.
