chinanews, shijiazhuang, sept. 20 – environment in baiyangdian, a famous scenic spot near beijing and tianjin, has greatly improved this year after local government has taken a series of measures including adding more water from the upper reaches into the river, clearing away sediments in the river bank and improving the environment near the region. environment in the swamp area in baiyangdian has greatly improved and water birds and fish, which had disappeared in the region for many years, have begun to show up again.

 

in recent years, hebei provincial government has invested 40 million yuan to ameliorate the environment in baiyangdian. they have cleared away 5 million cubic meters of sediment in the river bank. as a result, the ecological environment in baiyangdian has become better than before. the measures have prevented baiyangdian lake from shrinking and its ecological environment has become better in the swamp area. this has created a favorable ecological environment for the fish and water plants there.

 

at present, the ecological environment in baiyangdian has been restored to its original good condition. water level in baiyangdian has reached 6.85 meters and its quality has become much better. as a result, fish and birds have increased in large numbers.

 

there are now 192 types of birds living in the region. birds such as bustards, swans, and cranes, which have become extinct in the region for many years, have reappeared again. there are now 216 grey cranes living in the area and 27 bustards have been spotted there. bustard is a bird under the state-level protection list.

 

the type of fishes has also increased from 11 families and 18 species to the present 17 families and 34 species. fishes like opsariichthys bidens and abbottina rivularis, once no longer seen in the region, have shown up again now.

 

as water plants have increased over large areas, underground water level in baiyangdian has stopped sinking. this year, the underground water level is 0.6 meter less than previous years.
