henry fok leaves us

there are some people we should keep in mind, and they are those who are great contributors to our society or our nation. henry fok is among of them.

   fok ying-tung ,83,passed away in beijing on 28th oct, after suffering from cancer for more than three years. somebody said his death was a great loss for us. it proves that he has some influence. actually, he was the vice chairman of cppcc, and he paticipated in the drafting of the hong kong basic law. it sounds he is a politician or a lawyer.

   as far as i know, he is a successful businessman. he is rich. he is a cantonese, born in panyu, a district under guangzhou city.he is a great donator. he has denoted much money to our nation, especially in sporting areas. in addition, he is said to be the boss the white swan hotel in guangzhou, the first five-star hotel on the mainland.

   his success, his contribution, his everything, deserve my respects. it is a special day today. it is our chinese traditional festival, chung yeung festival. if you have time, why not mourn for him for a second?

   birth, oldness, disease, death, are both law of nature. i suppose fok should not have any regrets in his life. if any, there must be, why can't our national football team be strong enough to beat the japanese?

  

dreams may come

the movie dreams may come directed by xu jinglei reminds me of something. i haven't watched it, i just came across it in a newspaper. xu, one of the four young queens of film, is known as a actress, while she is also a talented director, and she received the best director award in the 2004 san sebastian film festival, for her a letter from an unknown woman.

    i am not going to touch upon what the moive is about, if you are interested, go and watch it. anyhow, dreams are my focus.

   it is no doubt that different people have different dreamw, and i am sure, any human being must have some dream. when you are a little kid, you dream to be a scientist; when you are growing up, you dream to be enrolled into a famous college; when you have grown up, you dream of being a millionaire, finding a beautiful wife... we have all kinds of dreams.  i have no exceptions.

   at this moment, i dream i can find a good job. i am always dreaming that i can work in gongdong tv , southern tv or guangzhou tv. i dream of being a news translator and editor in a tv station. but i am an english major, not involved in any broadcasting subjects. but as an old saying goes, god helps those who help themselves, i try to prepare, to make myself qualified for that kind of job.

   but dreams are one thing, while reality is quite another. you need to have a cool head. dreams come from reality, but are even further than reality. how to realize them is the question. of course, you must work hard. nobody can succeed without hard work. if you don't believe, or you are to depend on luck, you had better consult li ka-shing.

   once you have dreams, you have impetus, and you need to push it foward and work hard to realize them, otherwise, what you have are just day-dreams.

the 40-year-old virgin

   this morning, in the video and listening class, our teacher showed us a movie: the 40-year-old virgin. when we finished it, all of us wondered, what does it mean, and who is the virgin?

    are there such old virgins in the u.s? we doubt it. as far as i am concerned, the americans never take sex serious. if she likes, she can sleep with you after the first meeting. even you don't know each other's backgrounds, you can also have sexual intercourse.

    we have to admit, the americans are more open-minded than us. though with our fast development and mordenization, we become more and more open, we never talk about sex in public, let alone doing what the americans are used to.

    we often encounter culture shocks while communicating with westerners. it is hard for me to keep in mind what the westerners like and what they don't. but as an english major, i have to. what do you think about booking for a westerner a room numbered at 1313 on the 13rd floor in a hotel? surely he would refuse to move in and leave you angrily. most of westerners believe in christianity. 13 is an unlucky number to westerners as 4 to us. it is superstitious, but it is also culture.

    it is quite the true. everything is changing, and everyone is changing, day after day, year after year. while on the other hand, age disparity should not be a barrier to marriage. 82- year-old chen ning yang even married 28 year-old weng fang.
