city breaks - barcelona hotels, holidays & flights
barcelona at night
if you think of spain as being cheap, then dismiss this from your mind as far as barcelona hotels are concerned.
it is a major manufacturing base, as well as an attractive city by the sea. prices are higher than average for spain - probably about the same as the uk.
barcelona hotel rates are high and if you opt for the cheapest you are likely to be disappointed. if you are lucky enough to get a cheap air fare, we suggest you put the savings you have made into a decent hotel.
many people have heard of the la ramblas (named after a stream that ran from the mountains to the sea), supposedly one of the city’s attractions. in fact, we found it rather disappointing, full of cheap fast food joints, souvenir shops and low budget youngsters clutching water bottles and biting into hamburgers. you are also more likely to get pick - pocketed here than anywhere else in the city, as there is a low - life drug problem in some of the streets running off here.
but don’t be put off by our view of one street in barcelona, instead, get yourself north of here to plaza de cataluna. around here is an area of prestigious buildings from the 18th and 19th century, a lovely selection of shops, restaurants and decent tapas bars. along the passeig de gracia and rambia de cataluna (not to be confused with la ramblas) you are in the true high quality life of the city. a variety of shops, not all expensive, the vast department store "el corte ingles", and the gaudi inspired architecture for which the city is most famous. all within walking distance from the hotels below.
