Rodeo：牛仔竞技表演，骑术表演_词海拾贝

　今天给大家介绍一个有趣的词语rodeo。不少人欣赏美国的西部牛仔风格，而rodeo恰恰表示“牛仔竞技表演，骑术表演”，怎么样，别有一番美国风味吧？

　　rodeo来自西班牙语rodear，表示“四处转悠，走来走去”（go around）。它的本义是形容圈牛的圆形场地或者畜栏，牛群被“圈”(rounded up)在一个地方接受清点或检查。

　　大约1834年，rodeo出现在美语里，表示“围场，把已拢的牛群围在一起的圈地”。直到1914年，才有了现代意义“牧人马术表演”，即一种展示骑马或套牛等技巧的公开表演赛（a contest or exhibition of riding and roping skills）。有时候，rodeo也被用来表示“摩托车花式表演”。

　　rodeo作动词用时，表示“参加竞技”或“（为打烙印而）赶拢牛马”，例如：美国公司mineral river出版了一本书，书名为“if i were a word, then i'd be a song”里收录了比尔·斯坦斯（bill staines）的作品“a cowboy's hard times”，里面有这样一段歌词：

　i once was a cowboy, and i used to run wild.

　　and i rodeoed, wrangled, and rambled in style.

　but i'm too old for horses, too old for the show,
